Canada is larger than the European Union

The vast land area covered by Canada is often tough to be comprehended for people who do not have first-hand experience with it. Canada’s least recorded temperature is as freezing as Mars

The highly unsurprising fact about Canada is that its winters are really cold, really. The average least temperature for Ottawa in January is -14.4 C.

Nevertheless, in 1947 on 3rd February, Yukon’s tiny village Snag recorded a temperature of -63 C. It is almost equal to the temperature reported on the planet Mars's surface! This record-low temperature made remaining Canada’s winter appear like a relaxing vacation on the beach.

The number of lakes in Canada is more than anywhere in the world

One of the most amazing facts about Canada is that it has the largest surface covered with lakes than any other nation in the world. Renowned as the Greta White North, the nation has 563 lakes that are larger than 100 square kilometers. Nearly 18% of the fresh lake water of the world is encompassed by the Great Lakes itself.

Canada has the longest coastline in the world

Bordered on three sides by three diverse oceans – Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic, Canada has the longest coastline in the world. To state in direct terms, it accounts for 202, 080 Kilometers of the total 356, 000 kilometers of the world’s oceanfront property.

10 % of the world’s forests are present in Canada

That Canada has abundant greenery is one of its widely known facts. However, did you realize that the nation actually has 30% of the boreal forest in the world and 10% of the total forest cover in the world? An astounding 396.9 million hectares of forest and other woody land are present across the nation and 68% of it is coniferous. Above all, the majority of the forest land in Canada is owned publicly.

The only walled city in North America is Canada

The unique feature of Quebec City is that it has walls, which makes it exclusive of its kind in Canada and the US as well. This city is the only city situated north of Mexico to still consist of fortified walls. Quebec City’s fortifications were first built by the French and later developed by the English during the period 17th to 19th centuries.

6 times extra oil than Russia is present in Canada

Canada has approximately 176.8 billion barrels of oil that are recoverable and the oil is sticky and thick. You got it right, a semi-solid petroleum source – crude Bitumen is abundantly available in the oil sands of Canada. The world has approximately 249.67 billion barrels of the black stuff that is accessible and Canada consists of nearly 70.8% of it, which is 6 times more than Russia.

Facts to know before moving to Canada

Canada is so large that even its parks dwarf those present in other nations. For instance, Northwest Territories has Nahanni National Park Reserve which is a sight to watch due to its huge waterfalls. Meanwhile, its incredible area of 30,050 square kilometers is bigger than Israel and Albania.

The area of the Northwest Territories is 44,807 square kilometers which is bigger than Switzerland and Denmark.

North America’s strongest current is in Canada

If you wish to have the swim of your life, just check British Columbia’s Seymour Narrows but ensure to have a life jacket. The Discovery Passage stretch has one of the strongest tidal currents measured so far. The ebb speed recorded here is 18 km per hour and the field speed is 17 km per hour.

The world’s northernmost settlement is Alert in Nunavut, Canada

Just 817 kilometers from the North Pole at the northern tip of Ellesmere Islands is Alert, Nunavut. It is the northernmost place in the world that is inhabited permanently. Once you understand how freezing this place gets, you will truly make sense of the ‘temporary home’ statement.

July, the warmest month has an average balmy temperature of 3.4 C. The coldest month is January which has a true mean temperature of -32.19 C. It is not at all surprising that the place was named Alert!
