Canada approved a record 608,420 Work Permits in 2022

 In the year 2022, Canada approved an all-time high of 608,420 Work Permits. Most of the approvals were for candidates whose occupation was included in the Canada Occupation In Demand List.

The number of approvals for 2022 is almost 200,000 higher than in the year 2021 wherein Canada approved 414,000 Work Permits. The approvals were through two major Work Permit programs in Canada:

  • The IMP- International Mobility Program 
  • The TFWP Temporary Foreign Worker Program 

The majority of the Work Permit approvals in 2022 were through IMP with 77% of the total or 472,070 Work Permits. The rest of the permits i.e. 136,350 Work Permits were approved through TFWP.

In the year 2019, 303, 545 Work Visas were approved through IMP. The numbers declined slightly in 2020 during the pandemic. In 2021, the numbers rebounded to 310, 660. The IMP has thus witnessed a hike of 55% in Work Permits after 2019.

In the year 2019, 98,030 Work Visas were approved through TFWP. The numbers declined slightly in 2020 during the pandemic. In 2021, the numbers rebounded to 103,340. The TFWP has thus witnessed a hike of 39% in Work Permits after 2019.

The TFWP and the IMP

The IMP and TFWP both offer Work Permits to eligible TFWs - Temporary Foreign Workers residing and working in Canada. Nevertheless, there are major variations between these two programs that must be kept in mind.

Occupation In-Demand in Saskatchewan for Canada PR

The International Skilled Worker category of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) targets skilled people in critical occupations. If you have recent work experience in a high-skilled occupation that is not on the SINP Excluded Occupations List, Occupation in demand in Saskatchewan may be your path to Canadian immigration.

In a significant announcement, Saskatchewan updated the eligibility standards for the Occupations In-Demand sub-category in late 2019. Previously, applicants had to have work experience in an occupation on Saskatchewan's list of in-demand occupations. Any work experience gained at National Occupational Classification (NOC) Skill Level 0, A, or B is considered high-skilled work experience in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand sub-category does not correspond to the federal Express Entry scheme. As a result, successful applicants can apply directly to the Canadian government for permanent residence status without first creating an Express Entry profile or receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) in an Express Entry lottery.

Potential applicants may be from outside Canada or have legal status in Canada and in that case, a job offer is not required.

The Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand sub-category uses the SINP Expression of Interest (EOI) approach. Candidates must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), which is ranked using a points system similar to Express Entry. The top-ranked candidates are then invited on a regular basis.

Eligibility for Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand

To be qualified for the Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand sub-category, potential applicants must have at least one year of high-skilled work experience in their field of study or training and in an occupation at NOC level 0, A, or B in the previous ten years. In addition, that work experience must come from a job, not on the SINP Excluded Occupations List.


In addition, candidates for the Saskatchewan Occupations In-Demand sub-category must:

Score at least 60 points out of a possible 110 on the SINP point evaluation grid (see below);

  • Show that you have a language score of at least 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) (employers and/or regulatory agencies may need higher language scores)
  • Have a diploma, certificate, or degree from a one-year postsecondary study, training program, or apprenticeship. This certification must be similar to the Canadian education system, and if achieved outside of Canada, an educational credential assessment (ECA) from a designated organization must be submitted.
  • Show proof of Professional Status or Licensure (for regulated occupations or those with professional certification standards in Canada and/or Saskatchewan), if applicable for your occupation (current certification standards may be retrieved from Saskatchewan's website); and
  •  Showcase settlement funds and a settlement strategy

SINP Points Calculation

Candidates can build a profile on the SINP online system OASIS. Following the completion of your profile, you will be awarded a point score out of 110 based on the following categories. Candidates must receive at least 60 points to file an EOI. However, meeting a minimum of 60 points does not ensure that you will be invited to apply. Candidates in the pool are ranked based on their scores out of 110, and the top-ranking candidates will be invited when Saskatchewan immigration officials perform a draw from the pool of SINP skilled worker candidates.

Prior to the Expression of Interest (EOI) System, immigration to the province was based on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates must receive 60 points out of a possible 100 on the province's SINP point calculator in order to be considered.
